Waterbird Census of Isfahan Province
Monitoring Bird Populations for Informed Environmental Management
In 2018 and 2019, the AvayeBoom Bird Conservation Society conducted the waterbird and shorebird census in Isfahan Province, financially supported by the Isfahan Department of Environment. The DOE entrusted this task to AvayeBoom due to the high skill level of its experts and the government’s need for accurate data on bird diversity, population, and distribution to inform major management decisions.
Methodology
AvayeBoom experts conducted the census in 14 aquatic habitats across Isfahan Province. These habitats included both seasonal and permanent wetlands, natural and man-made, as well as large and small sites. All 14 wetlands were surveyed over two years using the International Waterbird Census (IWC) methodology to ensure precise population change detection. In the 2019 census, a total of 8,903 birds from 45 species were recorded. The census indicated an increase in the density of migratory birds compared to the previous year but showed a decline in species diversity. More adaptable bird species saw population increases, while more vulnerable species were not observed at all.
Key Findings
Several rare and endangered birds, including the Ferruginous Duck and the White-headed Duck, were observed and photographed during the census. The 2019 census results highlighted the importance of aquatic habitats created by various industries in Isfahan Province. Recommendations for better protection of these areas were proposed to the Isfahan Department of Environment.
Training and Volunteer Involvement
Enthusiastic volunteers were engaged and trained during the project. Additionally, local rangers accompanied the expert teams in each area, receiving field training and gaining valuable experience.
